Understanding Epic Poetry

Epic Simile Challenge

Rhythm of The Mind
He typed furiously, fingers flying across the keys

like a drummer at war, pounding the skins of battle.

Each click echoed through the silent room

like the steady beat of a heart during a chase,

fast, focused, and full of fire.

The screen lit up with his thoughts

like a storm cloud spilling lightning onto the earth,

his ideas too powerful to hold back.

Reflection

In “Rhythm of the Mind,” I used an extended epic simile to show how intense and creative typing can be. I compared it to drumming in battle and a storm releasing lightning to show the power of thoughts turning into words. The title reflects how the mind and body work together in a steady rhythm when someone is focused and inspired. This gives a simple act like typing a deeper, almost heroic feeling.

''Taking a Final exam"

She entered the exam hall with steady breath,
her pencil gripped like a sword forged in fire.
Around her, students hunched over desks—
like soldiers crouched in trenches before dawn,
each mind a battlefield of half-remembered formulas,
thoughts flitting like arrows through fog,
hope rising and falling like banners in the wind.
And she, the quiet general, read the first question
as if deciphering the runes of fate,
each answer a blow struck in silence against the ticking clock.

My Reflection : In this piece, I attempted to express the intensity and high stakes of taking a final test by comparing it to a battlefield, a traditional setting in epic poetry. The extended simile compares pupils to soldiers preparing for combat, emphasizing the stress, focus, and mental effort that everyone feels during an important test. Students, like fighters in trenches, are tense and prepared to confront challenges, and the exam becomes their “enemy.”
