Journal Week 1

I am both excited and nervous about starting this class. The feeling of being overwhelmed is quite strong, as there are many components of the platform with similar names to the pages we need to set up. However, I believe that once I start working in different parts of the platform and understand the function of each, my anxiety will lessen. This experience is certainly pushing me out of my comfort zone, and I suspect the anxiety stems from knowing that my learning curve needs to be short. Based on the pace this week, it is clear that things will move quickly in this course. Therefore, I have concluded that change is good, learning on the fly is manageable, and diving into new territory could lead to an amazing outcome. I expect to see growth in my skills and abilities by the end of this course. I am determined to overcome my anxiety and meet the challenge head-on.

The WikiEdu training, policies, and guidelines have been very helpful. They provided me with a better understanding of the Wikipedia community, including where to communicate and the nuances of engaging with others in the community. This information was also useful in helping me navigate the platform and understand what to expect in the environment.

It is incredible how digital technology has transformed the way we communicate and interact with one another. The written standard used to be letters sent via postal service or carrier, but today, we engage with one another through global connectivity via iPhones, smartphones, social media platforms, and messaging apps, such as texting, tweeting, and using messenger. While reading through the information on “Remediating,” it mentions that there is a difference between reading articles on the screen versus paper. My takeaway from this information is that we transform written documents into digital format for screen reading by making them more interactive and engaging for the reader. We often do a lot of on-screen reading today, which means we spend many hours utilizing screen time. This is now the digital world in which we find ourselves. Sometimes, I think it’s good to curl up with a good book. I look forward to doing the work in this class and learning something new.
